What Apple CarPlay does
Apple describes CarPlay as an in-vehicle experience that lets compatible iPhone apps appear on vehicle displays. Navigation apps can provide turn-by-turn directions, and Apple's CarPlay framework supports navigation-specific interfaces built around a map and system-controlled templates.
On supported vehicle systems, navigation information can also appear in areas such as an instrument cluster or head-up display.
For truck drivers, CarPlay is the presentation and interaction layer. The navigation app still calculates the route.
What Android Auto does
Android Auto provides a driver-optimized experience in which compatible applications on an Android phone can be used through a compatible vehicle or aftermarket display. Google classifies navigation as a supported Android for Cars app category and provides the Android for Cars App Library for turn-by-turn navigation experiences.
Like CarPlay, Android Auto does not automatically convert passenger-car directions into commercial-truck routes. The navigation provider still has to implement truck-aware routing.
Android Auto is not the same as Android Automotive OS
Google notes that a vehicle can run Android Automotive OS and also support Android Auto. Drivers should check the exact system in the truck rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
The routing engine matters more than the screen
A large in-dash map looks impressive, but a truck driver should care most about how the route was calculated.
A commercial routing system may need to account for:
- Truck height and low-clearance restrictions
- Gross and current vehicle weight
- Vehicle and trailer length
- Vehicle width
- Axle-load restrictions
- Truck-access restrictions
- Hazardous-goods restrictions when applicable
Those capabilities belong to the navigation app and its routing data — not to CarPlay or Android Auto themselves.

Why the in-dash experience still matters
Even though the routing engine is fundamental, the vehicle display can improve the way a driver interacts with navigation. A properly designed in-car interface can make important information easier to glance at and reduce the need to handle the phone.
Apple and Google both use driving-oriented frameworks and templates for supported car apps. These environments are intentionally more constrained than an unrestricted phone screen because the driver is operating a vehicle.
Vehicle screens are not all the same
Trucks and aftermarket head units use many screen sizes, aspect ratios, control methods, and dashboard layouts. Apple explicitly supports a range of CarPlay screen configurations, while Google's car-app framework is designed to present supported apps across compatible in-vehicle environments.
The exact appearance of a navigation app may therefore differ between vehicles even when the route itself is the same.
Traditional CarPlay and Android Auto depend on the phone connection
CarPlay and Android Auto commonly project a phone-based experience into the vehicle. If that connection is interrupted, the projected app experience can be interrupted as well.
Drivers should understand the wired or wireless setup in their truck and keep the phone sufficiently charged during long trips.
Reduced interaction matters in a truck
Professional drivers spend long periods behind the wheel, so predictable controls, glanceable information, and voice-capable workflows can be valuable. The goal should not be to reproduce every phone-screen control on the dashboard, but to surface the driving functions that matter while the vehicle is moving.
Truck-aware rerouting must stay truck-aware
If a commercial driver misses an exit, rerouting is not just about finding the nearest alternative road. The recalculated route should continue to use the vehicle profile and commercial restrictions.
That remains true whether the route is viewed on the phone, through CarPlay, or through Android Auto. The display platform changes; the truck's dimensions do not.
