Why an 18-wheeler needs more than ordinary GPS navigation
Passenger-car navigation primarily needs to know where the vehicle is and where it is going. A tractor-trailer introduces another question: can this particular vehicle use the road?
Commercial routing can consider properties such as vehicle height, width, length, current weight, gross weight, axle load, trailer configuration, and cargo restrictions. HERE's Routing API documentation explains that these vehicle properties allow a routing engine to consider additional restrictions, including roads where a vehicle may be too heavy, tunnels where it may be too tall, or roads where it may be too wide.
That distinction is the foundation of a useful semi-truck GPS.
A real truck profile
The first feature to look for is the ability to describe the truck being driven. A good commercial navigation system should not treat a straight truck, day cab, loaded tractor-trailer, and oversized combination as if they were identical.
Useful profile inputs can include:
- Overall height
- Overall width
- Overall vehicle and trailer length
- Current and gross vehicle weight
- Axle load or axle-group information
- Trailer information
- Hazardous-goods or cargo restrictions when applicable
Truck-specific road restrictions
A semi-truck GPS should be built around commercial restrictions rather than simply taking a car route and placing a truck icon on it.
Depending on the map data and routing system, commercial restrictions can include height, weight, width, length, truck-access limitations, turn restrictions, tunnel restrictions, and other vehicle-specific rules.
FMCSA also makes clear that commercial drivers can be cited for failing to comply with posted route restrictions. The GPS is a planning tool; the driver's obligation to obey actual roadway controls remains.
Hazmat-aware routing when the load requires it
Drivers hauling regulated hazardous materials may face route restrictions that do not apply to ordinary freight. A truck navigation system intended for Hazmat operations should be able to account for relevant dangerous-goods categories and restricted corridors when supported by its routing data.
The route also has to be evaluated against current regulations and posted restrictions. Navigation software should support the driver, not substitute for regulatory compliance.

Truck-aware rerouting
Missing an exit in a car is inconvenient. Missing an exit in an 18-wheeler can put the driver onto roads that were never intended for a large commercial vehicle.
Rerouting should therefore preserve the truck profile and commercial restrictions rather than reverting to a generic passenger-car path. The same truck dimensions and restrictions that mattered when the original route was calculated still matter after the driver leaves it.
Live traffic and meaningful route alternatives
Commercial drivers care about more than distance. Congestion, incidents, construction, and delays can affect appointment times, fuel consumption, parking availability, and hours-of-service planning.
A strong truck GPS should make it easy to understand whether an alternate route is actually useful while still respecting the truck's restrictions.
Weather information that matters on the road
Long-haul drivers can travel through several weather systems during one trip. Radar, warnings, wind, winter weather, severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, fog, and other conditions can become route-planning issues rather than simply forecast information.
The National Weather Service warns that high winds can be especially dangerous around high-profile vehicles and trailers, and that bridges and overpasses can become particularly hazardous in extreme wind. Weather awareness can therefore be especially valuable to commercial drivers.

For a driver, a truck stop is not just a point of interest. It may be the next fuel stop, meal break, shower, overnight parking location, repair opportunity, or hours-of-service stop.

Fuel information and route context
Fuel is one of the largest operating expenses for many owner-operators and fleets. Fuel information is more useful when the driver can consider it together with the route instead of treating fuel prices as a completely separate task.
The cheapest advertised gallon is not automatically the best stop. Distance off route, available services, parking, time, traffic, fuel-program discounts, taxes, and operational needs can all affect the real decision.
An interface designed for driving
Truck navigation contains a lot of information, but the driver should not have to dig through clutter while moving. Important information should be readable and controls should be predictable.
Useful driving-screen information can include the next maneuver, lane or exit guidance where available, current speed information, speed limits, route status, alerts, and quick access to driver-relevant tools. In-cab integrations can also be valuable when the platform and app support them.
Current maps, restrictions, and active development
Commercial navigation depends heavily on the quality and freshness of its underlying map and restriction data. Roads change. Construction changes. Restrictions change. New interchanges open. Businesses close or relocate.
Look for a navigation product backed by a serious mapping platform and an actively maintained application. Even then, no digital map is perfect, which is why roadway signage and driver judgment remain essential.

Before choosing a GPS device or truck-navigation app, ask whether it provides the features your operation actually needs.
Dedicated truck GPS or truck GPS app?
Both approaches can work. Dedicated GPS hardware offers a purpose-built screen and does not depend on the driver's primary phone for display. A truck-navigation app can offer easier updates, integration with a device the driver already carries, and access to additional connected features.
