It starts with the truck profile
A commercial routing engine needs to know what it is routing. A 26-foot box truck, a standard tractor-trailer, and an oversized permitted load do not have the same physical or legal constraints.
Truck navigation systems can use vehicle data such as current weight, gross weight, axle weight, height, width, length, trailer information, and hazardous cargo to evaluate known restrictions. HERE's current truck-routing documentation, for example, distinguishes legal, physical, hazardous-material, tunnel, and time-dependent restrictions.
How low-bridge avoidance works
If the routing map contains a known height restriction and the driver has entered the truck's actual height, the routing engine can compare the two during route calculation.
The quality of this protection depends on the underlying restriction data. HERE explicitly notes that truck-restriction coverage varies by region, and that where restriction data is unavailable, physical dimensions, weight, and hazardous-material restrictions may not be considered.
Weight limits are more complicated than one number
Commercial routing may evaluate several types of weight restrictions. A road or bridge may limit the vehicle's current actual weight, its maximum gross vehicle weight, or the amount of weight carried by an axle or axle group.
That is why simply telling a navigation app "I'm driving a truck" is not always enough. The more accurately the supported vehicle profile reflects the real configuration, the more restriction information the routing engine can use.
Truck-restricted roads are not always physical restrictions
Some roads prohibit trucks even when the truck would physically fit. Commercial routing can also account for legal access restrictions that apply to trucks as a class.
Restrictions may include truck-prohibited streets, gated or private roads, time-limited access, vehicle-specific rules, construction closures, or administrative truck bans. Some restrictions are active only during particular hours, days, weekends, or holidays.
Hazmat and tunnel restrictions
Hazardous-material routing adds another layer. Some roadways or tunnels prohibit particular types of dangerous goods even when the truck's physical dimensions are legal.
Truck-routing systems that support Hazmat profiles can use the cargo category during route calculation. HERE's routing documentation, for example, supports shipped-hazardous-goods settings and separate tunnel-category restrictions.
Drivers hauling regulated materials should still verify the route against applicable laws, permits, signage, and company requirements rather than treating software as the final authority.
Why two trucks can receive different routes
Consider two commercial vehicles headed to the same warehouse:
- Truck A is 12'4" tall and weighs 24,000 pounds.
- Truck B is 13'6" tall and weighs 78,000 pounds.
A road that is acceptable for Truck A might conflict with the height or weight profile of Truck B. A truck-aware routing engine can therefore produce two different routes even though both vehicles share the same destination.
That is one of the core differences between true commercial routing and ordinary car navigation.
Why truck GPS can still be wrong
Navigation data is not perfect. A restriction may be missing, recorded incorrectly, changed recently, temporarily modified by construction, or superseded by a local sign or permit condition.
The routing engine can only evaluate the restrictions it knows about and the vehicle information it has been given. Incorrect truck dimensions can produce an inappropriate route just as incomplete map data can.
For that reason, drivers should always watch signs, inspect questionable turns, confirm unfamiliar facilities, and stop before entering a road or structure that appears unsafe.

Will truck GPS always avoid a low bridge?
No system can guarantee that. Low-clearance avoidance depends on the bridge restriction being represented correctly in the routing data and the driver's truck height being entered correctly.
Does truck GPS know my weight automatically?
Not necessarily. Many systems require the driver or fleet configuration to provide the relevant weight information. The routing engine cannot accurately apply vehicle-specific weight restrictions if it does not know the vehicle's weight.
Can truck GPS route Hazmat loads?
Some commercial routing systems support hazardous-goods profiles and tunnel restrictions. Drivers must still comply with all applicable Hazmat laws, route requirements, permits, and signage.
Why did my truck GPS choose a longer route?
The shorter route may contain a truck restriction, low clearance, weight limit, prohibited road, Hazmat restriction, or another commercial-routing constraint that does not affect passenger cars.
